The Compositor node

Written by Dario

The Compositor node lets you combine images, videos, and other media into a single output by layering inputs, applying blend modes, adjusting order, and modifying transformations like position, scale, and rotation. It's your go-to node for building complex compositions directly on the canvas.

The Compositor also includes a built-in timeline for working with video layers, see Timeline Editor for more details.

Layers

The Compositor uses a layer-based system where each input becomes an independent layer.

Click a layer to select it. To select multiple layers, click and drag to draw a selection box. Hold Cmd/Ctrl or Shift to add or remove layers from the selection.

You can reorder, transform, style, and apply blend modes to each layer individually.

Background

Add an optional background color from the properties panel using the Fill option. Remove it at any time to return to a transparent canvas.

Shape layers

Add shapes directly to your composition without needing an external input. Select a rectangle, ellipse, triangle, or star from the toolbar, then click to place at default size or drag to set a custom size.

Once placed, shapes can be adjusted using the properties panel.

Text layers

Add text directly inside the Compositor using the text button in the toolbar. Pasting text onto the canvas creates a new text layer automatically.

To edit text in a text layer, click a layer to select it, then click again to enter edit mode. Text layers can be transformed and styled like any other layer from the properties panel.
