The Compositor node lets you combine images, videos, and other media into a single output by layering inputs, applying blend modes, adjusting order, and modifying transformations like position, scale, and rotation. It's your go-to node for building complex compositions directly on the canvas.
The Compositor also includes a built-in timeline for working with video layers, see Timeline Editor for more details.
Layers
The Compositor uses a layer-based system where each input becomes an independent layer.
Click a layer to select it. To select multiple layers, click and drag to draw a selection box. Hold Cmd/Ctrl or Shift to add or remove layers from the selection.
You can reorder, transform, style, and apply blend modes to each layer individually.
Duplicating and copying
Right-click a layer, or a selection of layers, to duplicate it, or to copy and paste it elsewhere, including into a different Compositor node. Layers fed by a connected node can't be duplicated or copied.
Grouping
Select two or more layers to group them into one, or drag a layer into or out of a group in the layer list. A group moves, resizes, and transforms as a single unit, and opacity or blend modes set on the group apply to everything inside it at once. To edit a layer inside a group, double-click to select it, then click away or press Escape to step back out.
Deleting a group deletes everything inside it, except layers fed by a connected node, which move up a level instead.
Background
Add an optional background color from the properties panel using the Fill option. Remove it at any time to return to a transparent canvas.
Shape layers
Add shapes directly to your composition without needing an external input. Select a rectangle, ellipse, triangle, or star from the toolbar, then click to place at default size or drag to set a custom size.
Once placed, shapes can be adjusted using the properties panel.
Text layers
Add text directly inside the Compositor using the text button in the toolbar. Pasting text onto the canvas creates a new text layer automatically.
To edit text in a text layer, click a layer to select it, then click again to enter edit mode. Text layers can be transformed and styled like any other layer from the properties panel.
Adding media
You can bring images, videos, and sounds into the Compositor directly, without connecting them through a node. Drag files onto the canvas, paste an image, or use the insert button in the Assets panel. Once added, they work exactly like layers connected through a node, you can trim, mute, and adjust volume the same way.
The assets panel below the layer list lists every image, video, and audio in your composition, including content not currently used by any layer. Filter by type or source, and see how many layers are using each item. Deleting a layer keeps its content here, so you can reuse it later.
